A) Sound like a 12 year old boy, or-
B) Sound like a man.
As always, RMP = Random Male Player. Sorry for the echo when I talk, I haven't figured out how to eliminate that completely yet.
Transcript:
Molly: So I re… I reposted it, oh, well yeah she just had the Batman sign on her underwear right where her vag is. And I just reblogged it, I just said, I said, “cloner!” [laughter]
Me (Jenny): There ya go.
Molly: Jenny should get that.
Me: I do!
RMP1: You got a deep voice. Are you like a dude, that wants to be a girl? A transsexual?
Molly: ….yeah.
[Note: The sound in the background is the noise the game makes when a player backs out of the lobby. In this case, it was RMP1's teammates backing out of the lobby.]
Me: You guessed it right on the first try! Congratulations!
RMP1: Ahhh, you know that’s right! [laughter]
Me: Now you better run away because your friends just left.
Molly: [laughter]
RMP1: Yeah, we’re gonna go play with some real players.
Molly: Oh, okay.
Molly: Oh, okay.
Me: Awww, see you later trashbag.
RMP2: Ohhhhhhh.

ReplyDeleteWhile, I'm sorry you have to face this, it is interesting to see how gender differences are treated. Keep up the recordings. :)
Kotaku got me here, content got me to stay.
ReplyDeleteKeep the recordings up! If I was any good at CoD, I'd join you!
I like where this project is going, keep it up! :D
ReplyDeleteAlso regarding the echo, if the player on the other end has loud speakers and a sensitive microphone, there's nothing you can do about it. Just make sure you're either using headphones, or your own speakers aren't too loud, and that'll reduce the risk.
This is a very cool idea and I hope it gets all the attention that deserves.
ReplyDeleteIts sad that this kind of sexism still exists.
Keep it up and Ill be here laughting at these douchebags faces.
Greetings from Brazil.
By the way, the background image is awesome!
i have had this happen to me for years.. even the other day playing minecraft! i am so happy you are making this. i have been called a liar... all the years ago playing wow getting kicked from parties because they found out i was female.
ReplyDeletego you!!
If you play a console multiplayer game meant mainly for boys in their early teens, you're just asking for it (whether you're a man or woman). I just can't comprehend why anyone would willingly subject themselves to CoD on a console. On the PC there's less voice communication or none at all, and the players are somewhat less retarded.
ReplyDeletePeople talk shit. Imagine that. Seriously, do you think it'd be any less if you're a man? At the end of the day that's what the mute function is for.

I think online video games are sort of like the early internet.
ReplyDeleteAt first, only a small group of people used the internet, and it was basically full of smut and not much else. There's still a lot of porn, don't get me wrong, but now that your mother, grandmother, great-uncle, and 5-year old cousin all use it, it's more tucked away behind walls and screens, and people are using the internet more and more for social interaction. As a result, the internet is slowly having to adjust to follow real-life social rules -- like putting the sex toys in a hidden place, not ranting on about your friend to the world, and making sure your Dad doesn't find the pictures from that party.
I think that online video games will follow a similar trend. There will probably always be some social depravity and nastiness lurking behind anonymous screen names, but the more women and other minorities use these games, the less unusual their presence will be. More normal social rules will apply (like being polite to one another) when your Mom or wife or girlfriend is playing, and the better it will get.
I do have to say though that I'm a bit disappointed by some of the retaliatory rudeness on the part of the women in these posts. Being nasty back to the offenders is not going to help in the long run. I know how tempting it is to shove it back is some ass's face, but in the end all it does is feed the trolls and make them feel validated that they called me a bitch, or what have you.
Thank you all for reading and listening, and taking the time to comment! I will be responding to some of the points made in these comments in a day or two, through a dedicated post on the front page. I feel like that's the most effective way to address you all.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I do not like playing on consoles. Too many children and those with child like mentalities (I think it has to do with accesibilty). At least on PC you can be in get on Vent with just your friends and ignore the morons in chat. This sounds like the usual trash talking I hear on console games (Halo and the like) but unfortunately these morons think they can dismiss you just becaue you are a woman. All they are doing when they make these types of comments is proving that they suffer from inadiquacies. Keep up the good fight and PWN all those NEWBS!
ReplyDeleteYeah. I don't even bother chatting when I play on consoles. Even in in-game chat on the PC I find way less sexism and more level headed players all-in-all. Must be the price of the entry level gaming PC is way more than a console.

ReplyDeleteHello, and thanks for the response! I try not to react too much when I run into rude people, but sometimes I lose my temper. I feel like I'm well within my right to respond, even though it may be "disappointing" to others. Even I, with my skin of steel, can't help but react sometimes. I don't feel like it makes me less of a person, it just makes me human. I'm not perfect.
In this guys defense... I totally sounded like a tranny.
